School officials have a responsibility to provide a safe, secure, and productive learning environment. Dress and appearance play a role in doing so. Although we do not want to support violating the law, including legal rights of others, we believe that properly implemented policies and strategies around dress and appearance are within the realm of reasonable actions which can be taken by school officials to promote a positive school climate.

Dress codes and uniforms can help reduce the potential for conflict by;

• Reducing conflict stemming from socio-economic status

• Reducing ways in which gang members can identify themselves

• Reduces the risk of students being robbed of expensive clothing

• By requiring uniforms, it could help school administrators identify trespassers and other visitors
